Think about all of the different feelings you experience in a single day. The positive and negative circumstances of your life can spark a lot of different emotions. Those feelings are real—and powerful.
Your emotions are more than just a straightforward reaction to what’s happening. They can reveal who you are and act as a guide for your actions moving forward.
When it comes to experiencing emotions in our day-to-day lives, it’s tempting to react in one of two ways: downplay them or let them overwhelm us. Unfortunately, those reactions simply leave us feeling stuck or confused.
A healthier reaction would be to pause and acknowledge how we’re feeling. But having a sense of our emotions at the surface level is just a starting point. To truly see how our emotions are pointing us to our best selves, we have to go deeper.
Below is a sample of our emotions sheet from our Foundational Growth Program. Hopefully it will help you identify how you are feeling and dig a little deeper if needed.
By taking time to identify, explore and use our emotions as a guide, we can better understand how the world impacts us and what brings us joy. Emotions can guide us to a deeper awareness of our purpose and how to live it out.
To move beyond the surface level of your emotions, start with these dos and don’ts:
DON’T simplify or ignore emotions.
Shoving our emotions downward or simplifying them only creates a cycle that is neither joyful nor healthy. Your emotions are trying to tell you something. The question is: are you listening?
DO take time to go deeper.
Emotions are a powerful guide but not a destination. By pressing pause to explore our deeper emotions—those that live at our very core—we gain insight into what we need to move forward.
DON’T be consumed by emotions.
Listening to emotions is a positive thing, but when we become consumed by emotions, we can get stuck. How do we move past that state of overwhelm? The trick is identifying the deeper emotion that tells us what’s really going on.
DO use your emotions as a guide.
Exploring how we feel is an important step in identifying our purpose. Think about how your deep emotions can guide your actions and behavior. Following your emotions as a guide, take those purposeful steps to grow into your future self.
Use these questions to tap in to your emotions and allow them to guide you:
- Take a few moments to sit quietly and listen to your present emotions. What are you feeling right now? Then, go further: What is the deeper emotion and what is it telling you?
- Reflect on a time when you felt joyful, powerful, or peaceful—when you felt authentically YOU. How are these positive emotions guiding you? What do they tell you about your purpose?
- Alternatively, think about a time when you felt empty, lost, paralyzed, or helpless. What did you learn from that experience? How did you grow from it?
